Denis Yashin

Denis Yashin (b. 1984, Novosibirsk – lives and works in Vienna, Austria) operates between contemporary abstraction and media-based art. The point of departure in his practice is sound — not as motif or acoustic event in space, but as a visual system.

Within the ongoing project Making Sound Visible, he transfers sound waves directly onto the canvas. Loudspeakers set the surface into motion, while paint-soaked material traces marks that do not emerge from conscious gesture but from physical resonance. Painting appears here not as the expression of a hand, but as the outcome of a system.

By replacing the painterly gesture with an acoustic process, Yashin shifts questions of authorship, control, and composition. Sound functions as a structuring principle that generates form without becoming visible itself. The canvas becomes a resonant body — a site where energy, material, and space are translated into a visual event.

In addition to acrylic on canvas, Yashin works with glass and acrylic glass; custom-built frames — crafted from wood or produced through 3D printing — extend the works into space. His practice has been presented in exhibitions and projects in Austria and abroad.
